(HealthDay News) -- A water exercise (aquatics) class offers a great cardiovascular workout that's not too tough on the joints.

The American Council on Exercise says you should follow these guidelines before you sign up for an aquatics course:

  • Observe an aquatics class at your local YMCA or fitness center to see if it's a good fit.
  • Look for a class that includes a solid warmup, a cardio and strengthening workout that increases in intensity, then a cool-down period.
  • Make sure the class includes music that you enjoy.
  • Ensure that instructors are certified, with special training in aquatics.
