How to tell if a boater is drunk

(HealthDayNews) -- When a police officer pulls over a driver, there are a number of quick observations that can be made to see if the driver has been drinking. But some of these observations aren't practical when the driver is operating a motor boat in the middle of a bay.

So the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention suggests some quick tests to tell whether a boater is drunk or sober.

  • Look at the boater's eyes. See if they seem to wander back and forth, out of control.
  • Ask him to recite the alphabet.
  • Ask him to clap his hands, alternating palms and backs, while counting.

If a boater can't pass those tests, ask him to head for shore to take a blood alcohol test. He probably won't pass that one either.
