Intermittent Fasting Beats Low-Cal Diet for Weight Loss with Type 2 Diabetes

In a new study, people with type 2 diabetes lost more weight following a time-restricted eating plan than those on a low-calorie diet, and they found fasting easier than cutting back.

Trying to lose weight while managing diabetes can be a real challenge, but a new study finds that it may be easier if you practice intermittent fasting. Researchers divided 75 patients with type 2 diabetes into three groups. The first group was asked to eat only between noon and 8:00 p.m. each day. The second group was instructed to reduce their calorie intake by 25%, while the last group was told to follow their normal routine.

The participants' weight, waist circumference, blood sugar levels, and other health indicators were tracked for six months. Those in the time-restricted eating group found it easier to follow the regimen and lost more weight. According to the results, both groups experienced similar decreases in long-term blood sugar levels, or HbA1c.

The senior author states that the study shows time-restricted eating might be an effective alternative to traditional dieting for people who can't stick to a traditional diet or are burned out on it. However, she emphasizes that larger studies are still needed and advises people with diabetes to consult with their doctors before trying intermittent fasting.
