Early Risers May Be at Greater Risk for Anorexia

Researchers have discovered a genetic association between anorexia nervosa and being a morning person.

People who are early risers may be at greater risk of developing anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder that affects millions of adults, teens and children in the United States.

Researchers examined genes related to anorexia and the body’s internal clock or circadian rhythm.

They discovered the condition is associated with being a morning chronotype … or person who prefers going to bed and getting up early.

They also found a relationship between anorexia and insomnia.

The authors say anorexia is different from other mental health conditions that tend to be evening-based such as depression, binge eating and schizophrenia.

The lead author says these “results could direct future investigations into circadian-based therapies for anorexia nervosa prevention and treatment.”
