When most people think about going low-carb, they picture a nice steak dinner or a breakfast of bacon and eggs. However, a new study finds that plant-based low-carb diets may be better for your health and weight.
Researchers analyzed data from more than 123,000 adults who reported on their eating habits every four years. According to the results, those who followed low-carb plans that were high in proteins, fats, and carbs from healthy plant-based sources experienced slower long-term weight gain. In contrast, participants who stuck to a total low-carb or animal-based plan put on more pounds over time.
The senior author says these findings could challenge popular beliefs about low-carb diets and suggest that public health initiatives should continue to promote dietary patterns that emphasize healthful foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.
