MONDAY, March 18 (HealthDay News) -- For patients with nose and chin deformities, a single combined rhinoplasty and genioplasty approach provides long-term esthetic stability, according to a study published online March 14 in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.
Dario Bertossi, M.D., from the University of Verona in Italy, and colleagues conducted a retrospective study to examine the long-term results and complications of combined rhinoplasty and genioplasty in a cohort of 90 cases performed from January 2002 through January 2004.
The researchers found that, at three years, 45.6 percent of the reduction genioplasty patient population had 100 percent stability, while 52.4 percent of the augmentation genioplasty population had 100 percent stability. The chin was stable, with a maximum of 1 mm recurrence.
"The results of this study indicate that the combined approach in correcting the facial profile is an effective procedure to achieve a more harmonic and consistent clinical outcome," the authors write. "Considering these results, single-session rhinoplasty and genioplasty should be proposed to the patient every time the aesthetic surgeon sees coexistence of nose and chin deformities."
